Garage Door Won't Close After a Florida Power Outage? Here's the Fix
Afternoon thunderstorm rolls through Sarasota, the lights flicker, and now your garage door opens but won't close. Nine times out of ten it's one of four things — and three of them you can fix in under a minute.
1. The safety sensors got knocked out of alignment
When power blinks, the photo eyes at the bottom of the door track can lose their handshake. If one sensor's LED is solid and the other is blinking — or one is off entirely — that's your culprit. Loosen the wing-nut, slide the sensor until both LEDs go solid, and tighten. The door should close on the next press.
2. Your opener is in vacation / lock-out mode
LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain openers can flip into a lock-out state when power restores. Look for a 'Lock' button on the wall control — if it's blinking, press and hold it for 2 seconds until it clicks off. The remote will start working again.
3. The battery backup is dead or disconnected
Florida law requires battery backup on every residential opener installed since 2019. After an outage, the battery may be drained below the threshold the logic board needs to operate the door safely. The opener will beep and refuse to close. Plug a meter on the battery — if it reads under 11.5V on a 12V pack, replace it. Most batteries last 3–5 years in Florida heat.
4. The emergency-release rope got pulled during the outage
If anyone tugged the red rope while the power was out, the trolley is disengaged from the chain. The door will hum but won't move. Pull the rope toward the door (or toward the opener — depending on model) until you hear a click, then run the opener once manually. The trolley re-engages and you're back in business.
When to call a technician
If you've tried all four and the door still won't close, the logic board may have been hit by a surge — that's a $189–$249 board swap and we usually have one on the truck. Call or text (561) 880-7707 and we'll dispatch the same day across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties.
FAQ
Why does my garage door open but not close after a storm?+
The most common cause is safety-sensor misalignment after the power blinked. Check that both LEDs at the bottom of the track are solid (not blinking). If one is blinking or off, loosen the wing-nut and slide the sensor until both go solid.
How long does an opener battery backup last in Florida?+
Typically 3–5 years. Florida heat shortens lead-acid battery life vs. a northern climate. If your opener is beeping after an outage, the battery is usually the first thing to test.
